The HOT, which stands for High Output Turbo, really is a hot hatch running the 0-60 sprint in seconds! Power starts at 230bhp and this can be raised to 290bhp with a remap, sports exhaust with sports catalyst and air filter (a more conservative remap is usually better and will retain reliability, driveability and economy.) Without the exhaust and sports cat this power figure will be nearer to 275bhp on a more modest remap. The power gains on the Diesel engines start to make petrol ownership irrelevant. Hence the HOT model. Then there is the V6 engine (pre 2001) after 2001 the v6 was noticeably slower and less economical! It is not easy locating performance parts or remaps for the so it is not ideal for a tuning project - especially when the lineup includes the supremely tunable HOT engine option. The following modifications are usually performed by our members, decide how far you want to go before you begin. Getting the right mods for your planned usage of the car is vital. Best Engine Mods for your car Mapping - remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings, aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction. Upgrades to turbochargers and superchargers - forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains. Head work - The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence. Typical stage 1 mods often include: Exhaust, Panel air filter, Remap, lighter flywheel Typical stage 2 mods often include: Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, fuel injector & fuel pump upgrades,power clutch Typical stage 3 mods: Engine balancing, adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), competition cam, sports gearbox. Superb braking is standard across the range with the ABS, Handling would need some attention so uprated springs and dampers will dramatically improve handling. The offers 120bhp in standard form but a remap can lift this to an impressive 160bhp. One of the best value mods around has to be a remap for a modern diesel. It is worth noting that the recent 52 plate model cannot be remapped so earlier cars are better. The TiD offers 150bhp in standard from and this can be remapped to 190bhp. The V6 TiD starts at 166bhp and with a remap will produce around 217bhp. Saab 9-5 intake and exhaust modifications. Before you start doing engine mods you have to get the breathing right and remove any restrictions in the system that could inhibit air the airflow into the engine is the primary part of tuning so get a better flowing air filter. Induction kits sound great with the induction roar they create but due to the warm air in the engine bay they will not add noticeable power and actually rob you of power. (The standard 9-5 airbox is NOT RESTRICTIVE unless you have achieved a massive power hike! Panel filters are all you need performance wise.) A good high performance sports exhaust is an essential to balance your engines need for free flowing air, just adding an induction kit on it's own will do little to increase your power. Gas flowing the head will allow you to maximise your air/fuel charge but TorqueCars suggest you refer this job to a professional though who has a proper flow bench and machine tools Your 9-5 clutch can sap a lot of your power if it starts to slip and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40 or 50%. Fit a performance clutch (double or triple plate) to avoid power losses through the transmission if the clutch does start to slip after a performance mod. Remaps offer significant power gains on all turbo charged cars. On NA (naturally aspirated) engines the benefits are doubtful. However a remap on a NA (naturally aspirated) engine will help unleash the potential if you have done a lot of mods. Adding forced induction will see big power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. It is easier to bolt on a supercharger than it is to get a turbo working. With a turbo the boost curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it hard to map. It is easier to map a supercharger because the boost is proportional to engine speed on a linear curve. Adding forced induction will usually require a lower compression ratio or water injection. Saab 9-5 Wheel modifications. Alloy wheels will help the brakes cool down and are usually lighter than the steel ones. The downside to large alloy wheels on your 9-5 is that you alter your effective final drive ratio and this will have a detrimental effect on acceleration and performance. For this reason we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 16 inches, although we know some of our members have gone larger than this with no problems. It adjusts each of these factors to make them complement each other and also sets up a number of filters and limiters in order to get the right information and ensure safety and reliability. What we do with your engine is improve the combustion process and thus make the engine more efficient. All of the modifications we perform are based on real time measurements, meticulous calculations and numerous tests and data logging which means we do not guess anything or gamble by increasing the values of the turbo pressure, or injection. While performing modifications, we follow the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) architecture and keep the same level of quality and reliability while ensuring better performance. Air/Fuel Ratio / Lambda The correct ratio in the air and fuel mixture is always measured before tuning. After that we modify the values and perform additional measurements with our data logging equipment to make sure that the proportions of air and fuel are perfect. A deviating lambda value coming from a mechanical problem on a particular car, or a mistake in remapping itself can have disastrous consequences. Intake Air Temperature During data logging we measure the air intake temperature. This is one of the ways to verify that our modification is safe for your engine. Some customers have even had higher performing aftermarket intake air filters installed in the wrong place, thus feeding the engine with the air that is hotter than it should be and causing dramatic performance drops and unreasonably and dangerously high temperatures inside the engine. Oil / Fuel / Coolant temperatures Having these temperatures at their optimal levels is another sign that our modifications are safe for your car. This is why these are measured during data logging. Optimizing ignition timing for gasoline engines When tuning gasoline engines, in addition to increasing the turbo pressure and injection, we also adjust the ignition by advancing it or retarding it, as necessary. The changes we make during tuning considerably affect combustion and this calls for an adjustment in ignition timing. The results of proper ignition timing are more efficient combustion and more power and torque. This optimization also benefits the exhaust system and turbocharger and controls the explosions inside the engine. Inefficient combustion is the prime cause of engine damage on gasoline engines. This is why we make sure that we modify the ignition timing and make it perfect by checking the engine operation numerous times during our data logs. Some tuners gamble by adding a certain percentage of boost pressure and fuel without adjusting them to match, or testing thoroughly before and after tuning, or they simply purchase ready-made software on the internet, but this is far from being recommended. It is of the highest importance to know how the engine works and what kind of a setup the paths of fuel, air and ignition have. Many customers feel that if they can notice the power increase after tuning that it is a job well done. However, simply having more power does not mean your engine is tuned optimally. In most cases this will result in adjustments that are completely illogical when compared with the OEM setup, often inefficient and sometimes even harmful to the engine. In order to prevent all these we perform data logging. Data logging is performed during the software modifications and it includes measuring the air/fuel ratio, turbo values, ignition and various temperatures and it is practically irreplaceable if you want a safe and reliable car after tuning. Turbo Requested and actually delivered boost can vary so we make sure to measure it in order to have the correct information. After that we perform the modification and check to make sure that the actual operation is as it should be. Every turbo system is subject to wear which can alter its performance so it should by no means be adjusted without having all the information about that particular car. Many tuners will often increase the boost pressure to unnecessarily high levels, especially in diesel engines, and this inevitably leads to higher wear and premature malfunction. Exhaust Gas Temperature In addition to measuring the air inteke temperature, we also measure the exhaust gas temperature during data logging. A mechanical problem or a bug in the software modification can cause excessive temperatures which can cause damage to the turbo and exhaust systems. This is why controlling these values before and after turning is of the highest importance. Optimizing injection timing for diesel engines Aside from increasing the injection period, it is also important to optimize the injection timing. Adjusting the exact moment when the ignition starts and making it perfect is very important for ensuring the best possible combustion wave and the best possible torque peak. This results in a more efficient combustion process and an increase in torque and power. This optimization also benefits the exhaust system, DPF and turbocharger and also optimizes ignition. We always make sure we provide the optimal settings. Noticeable tuning effects We always check to make sure that the effects of our tuning are as noticeable as they are safe. This may sound strange, but it is often the case with some tuners that tuning is performed with WOT (Wide Open Throttle – 100% throttle). However, vast majority of driving time is not at full throttle, which means that you will not notice the benefits of tuning most of the time. ZIP smart safety features In order to protect your parts we have incorporated a number of smart and adaptive safety features in our tuning software. For example, when the atmospheric pressure is low, the boost demand is automatically reduced, which protects your turbo system. This is very common when you are driving in the mountains. In case the measured temperatures of the intake, exhaust and oil are high, the demands for fuel injection and turbo pressure are also automatically different. If you pour fuel that is of lower quality than regular, the engine can detonate. In this case the ignition is delayed and the boost pressure is reduced which eliminates the possibility of a detonation which can seriously damage the engine.
